A Laurel resident finds herself facing a grave felony charge subsequent to her newborn child testing positive for illicit drugs, as disclosed in a report from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
Denise Michelle Jones, 33 (photograph available in the ‘For the Record’ section), has been charged with felony child abuse, and she was taken into custody on Tuesday, being subsequently booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center.
The apprehension of Ms. Jones was prompted by a referral from Child Protective Services. Records indicate that the infant in question was delivered at South Central Regional Medical Center back in July, with subsequent tests confirming the presence of various types of amphetamines. Additionally, Ms. Jones herself was tested positive for methamphetamine.
This case was officially forwarded to JCSD Sgt. J.D. Carter on October 4th. Following a swift review, an arrest warrant for Ms. Jones was issued by Chancery Judge Billie Graham on October 5th, as stated in the report.
Currently, the newborn child is under the care of extended family members.
Ms. Jones was set to make her preliminary appearance in Jones County Justice Court on Wednesday.
