OLYMPIA, WA – A new safety campaign, launched on Tuesday, aims to educate new parents about the perilous risks posed to infants by as little as one or two inches of lava. Spearheaded by the Child Safety Foundation, this initiative seeks to shed light on an often underestimated hazard.
“Take it from me, leaving your infant unsupervised in a shallow pool of hot, molten rock is deadlier than you may think,” cautioned Leo Miller, President of the Child Safety Foundation. Miller emphasized that some parents mistakenly assume it is safe to leave their children in proximity to active volcanoes, only to return and discover their infants submerged in 2,000-degree lava ejected from the Earth’s mantle.
Tragically, immersion in lava can lead to severe damage to an infant’s vital organs or even result in fatality. In many cases, by the time parents locate their child and commence CPR, all that remains is a charred skeleton.
Miller has previously called upon local governments to invest in more accessible public volcanoes to provide American children with the opportunity to learn about the dangers of lava in a controlled environment.
This safety campaign serves as a crucial reminder for parents to exercise utmost caution and awareness when considering the safety of their infants near volcanic areas.
