Tariffs on Baby Products Could Lead to Price Hikes in 2025

by daisy

American parents may soon face higher prices on baby essentials like formula, diapers, car seats, and strollers due to rising tariffs on imports. The price increases are linked to trade policies under President Donald Trump, adding to the already steep cost of raising a child in the U.S., which averages over $29,000 annually, according to LendingTree.

With tariffs rising on imports from more than 75 countries, including a 145% duty on Chinese goods, many baby products could see price hikes. “Unless these items are excluded from tariffs, prices may increase soon,” warned BabyCenter, though shortages are not expected.

Most specialty baby formulas, often imported from Europe, still face a 10% import tax. Families who rely on these formulas for children with dietary needs may bear the brunt of price increases. The U.S. formula supply chain remains fragile, with the WIC program buying half of all formula sold.

Diaper materials like plastic and bamboo are sourced from countries like China, India, and Vietnam, and now face tariffs as high as 145%, leading to smaller pack sizes, fewer discounts, or higher prices.

Car seats, strollers, and cribs, primarily imported from China, also face cost hikes. Industry groups and members of Congress are urging the Trump administration to exempt these safety-critical products from tariffs.

Experts recommend more sustainable strategies for families to manage costs, such as using cloth diapers, switching formula brands, setting up subscriptions, and joining community groups for shared products.

While shortages are unlikely, the cost of parenting could rise if tariffs stay in place, putting further strain on families already dealing with high costs.
