Parents Warned About Cot Cleaning Mistakes That Could Cause Allergies and Eye Infections

by daisy

Parents have been urged not to underestimate the impact of their baby’s cot on health, especially for newborns. Baby expert Annalisa Thomas explained that babies are particularly vulnerable to unsanitary environments, as their immune systems are still developing. Dirt, allergens, bacteria, and dust mites in the cot can lead to allergies, respiratory issues, skin irritations, and eye infections.

While it’s important to keep the cot clean, parents must be cautious with cleaning products. Thomas advised against using bleach, ammonia, strong chemicals, or scented cleaners, as these can harm babies’ delicate skin and health. Instead, she recommended using baby-safe or organic cleaning products.

Thomas’ cleaning routine includes stripping the cot down entirely, removing all bedding, pillows, and toys. These should be washed in hot water with a baby-safe detergent. If washing by hand or in a machine, she stressed that the water should be clean as well.

Next, parents should vacuum the cot to remove dust and bedbugs that can trigger allergies. Afterward, a soft cloth and warm water with skin-friendly soap should be used to wipe down all cot surfaces, especially hard-to-reach areas. The cot should be left to air-dry completely before new bedding is added.

Thomas suggested cleaning the cot every couple of months to promote a healthier sleep environment. When it comes to cleaning the mattress, she advised following the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Finally, she warned that while cleanliness is key, over-sanitizing can also be harmful to babies’ health. Exposure to a small amount of everyday dirt can help strengthen their immune system. “A clean crib is important, but some exposure to germs can prepare them for the world outside,” Thomas said.
