A newly graduated New York police officer had the unique experience of delivering a baby on the job just days after finishing the police academy.
Officer Jonathan Verity, along with Officers Joseph Lacey and Brendan Nappi, responded to a 911 call about a woman in active labor on March 24 in Shirley, N.Y. The officers helped the 37-year-old mother deliver a healthy baby girl on the side of the highway during a heavy rainstorm.
The Suffolk County Police Department celebrated the birth in a Facebook post, saying, “Happy Birthday, little one!” The officers assisted the mother, who was traveling in a Honda Accord along Sunrise Highway, and made sure she and the baby were safely transported to Stony Brook University Hospital.
In a heartwarming gesture, the officers later visited the mother and newborn at the hospital with gifts, including a stuffed animal, a pink “It’s a Girl!” balloon, and a bouquet of flowers.
The department highlighted that it was a particularly special day for Officer Verity, who had just graduated from the Suffolk County Police Academy the week before. The mother and baby were reported to be doing well.
The story quickly gained praise from the public, with many commending the officers’ quick response and dedication. One Facebook user wrote, “Great job for a newbie out in the field. Plus, the other 2 officers who assisted. You all are amazing!”
