Parents are being warned about the risks of the NeeDoh Nice Cube and other gel-filled sensory toys, following reports of children suffering chemical burns. The toys, designed to be squeezed and manipulated, have been linked to injuries when they rupture, releasing a harmful gel.
The situation worsened due to a viral TikTok trend, which encourages children to microwave or freeze the toys to change their texture. This trend has led to severe incidents, including one where a 7-year-old girl suffered critical burns after the toy exploded in her hands.
Consumer Reports (CR) is urging the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to investigate the safety of these toys. CR’s senior safety analyst, Gabe Knight, emphasized the need for research into the gel used in these toys and urged manufacturers to ensure they are free from hazardous chemicals.
In response, toy manufacturer Schylling has reinforced safety warnings and is working with TikTok to remove harmful content promoting the dangerous trend. The company assures that their products meet current safety standards and prioritize consumer safety.
