IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa Health Care’s downtown campus has introduced new technology designed to enhance safety for newborns.

Shayla Malone, a nurse manager in the maternal child department and a mother of five children born at the unit, played a key role in advocating for this new technology. She emphasized the importance of having the highest quality digital imaging for baby footprints, noting its role in ensuring infant safety.

The CertaScan system captures a newborn’s footprint, providing both safety and advanced documentation for families. “We’re able to give the patient a digital footprint as a memento, which includes the baby’s stats like weight, time of birth, and date,” Malone said.

The University of Iowa Health Care is the first in the state to implement this technology. It connects each newborn’s digital footprint to the mother’s fingerprint in the electronic health record, according to Jennifer Miller, the Chief Administrative Officer of the UIHC Downtown Campus.
