GUYMON, Okla. (KFOR) – City officials in Guymon are urging families with infants to avoid using tap water after high nitrate levels were detected in the public water system. The nitrate concentration, measured at 11 mg/L, exceeds the EPA’s safe limit of 10 mg/L, posing a serious risk to infants under six months old.
The contamination can cause “blue baby syndrome,” a potentially life-threatening condition. City officials are advising parents not to use tap water for baby formula, juice, or food, and to switch to bottled or low-nitrate water for infants.
Key warnings from the City of Guymon include:
- Do not use tap water for baby formula, juice, or food.
- Use bottled or low-nitrate water for infants until further notice.
- Boiling tap water does not remove nitrates; it can make them more concentrated.
- While adults and older children can drink the water, pregnant women should consult a doctor.
An investigation is ongoing to identify the source of the contamination, according to city leaders. Updates will be provided once the water is deemed safe.
