Understanding why women die during or shortly after pregnancy, and why infants die before birth or in their first month, is crucial for reducing preventable deaths. Maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) plays a key role in this effort. It identifies, notifies, quantifies, and determines the causes of maternal and neonatal deaths and stillbirths. This process informs measures to prevent these tragedies.
The MPDSR system aims to tell the stories behind these deaths, improve the quality of care for women and infants, and reduce the high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality.
This upcoming webinar will present key findings from the report titled Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response: Global Report on Decade of Implementation. It will highlight progress made over the past ten years, as well as barriers faced in implementing MPDSR. The discussion will also cover how MPDSR can be successful in various contexts, including humanitarian settings. A gynecologist-obstetrician from Cameroon will share insights from one of the report’s eight country case studies.
Additionally, the webinar will introduce a new legal manual titled Strengthening Legal and Regulatory Frameworks for Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response. This manual aims to help countries establish a strong system for reviewing and addressing all maternal and perinatal deaths. A legal expert will discuss Pakistan’s experience using this manual.
The webinar will conclude with a question-and-answer session.
