Baby Girl Delivered in Ambulance Amid Flooding in Ohio County

First responders in Hancock and Ohio Counties helped deliver a baby girl off the side of the road early Sunday morning in Fordsville, Kentucky, after heavy rain created challenging conditions.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, emergency teams picked up a woman in labor and her partner. Fordsville Fire Lieutenant Michelle Cooper explained that they initially intended to take the woman to the hospital.

“We loaded her into the ambulance and started heading toward the hospital,” Lieutenant Cooper said, “but we ended up returning to the fire department.”

However, the baby girl had other plans. At the intersection of Easton Road and Highway 54, Hancock County EMS delivered the baby in the ambulance.

“I just want to make sure we give a huge thanks to Hancock County EMS, because they were the true rock stars in this,” Lieutenant Cooper said.

While the mother and baby were doing well, flooding and debris from the rain made it difficult to reach the hospital, forcing the ambulance to take an alternate route.

“Luckily, mom and baby were doing great, with all their vitals looking good,” Lieutenant Cooper said. “What would normally be a 20- to 25-minute drive turned into over an hour, and it took two hours total to get to the hospital.”

Despite the delays, the family safely reached the hospital, and Lieutenant Cooper expressed relief. “It’s scary because things can change in the blink of an eye, but we made it there, and everyone was happy and healthy.”
