The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the mother involved in a shooting incident in Byron earlier today has died. Sheriff Ken Blackburn identified the mother as 32-year-old Tranyelle Harshman, who passed away around noon.
Neighbors and residents of Byron were shocked by the tragedy. NonStop Local reporter Ren Wadsworth spoke with several locals who described the family as happy, making the event even more heartbreaking. Wadsworth also briefly spoke with the father of the children, who urged the public to show compassion, stating that his wife was not a “monster,” but a person facing her own struggles.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a 911 call was received at 1:30 p.m. from a home on East Shoshone Street. The caller, identified as Harshman, reported that her daughters had been shot. She described the scene, mentioning two children upstairs in cribs and two others downstairs in a shared bedroom. The call was abruptly disconnected before authorities could gather further information.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Lovell Police Department and Wyoming Highway Patrol, responded quickly to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found two young girls, ages two and nine, dead from gunshot wounds. Two other children, ages two and seven, were critically injured but still alive.
The mother, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was found alive in an upstairs bedroom. First responders administered emergency care until ambulances arrived. The mother and the seven-year-old were transported to North Big Horn Hospital before being airlifted to receive advanced care. Sadly, the two-year-old, who initially showed signs of life, later succumbed to her injuries.
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations, is processing the scene. Sheriff Blackburn praised the efforts of the first responders, acknowledging the bravery of all those involved.
An ongoing investigation is underway, and the condition of the mother and toddler remains unclear. Authorities have assured the public that the incident has been contained and there is no further threat.
In a statement, Sheriff Blackburn expressed his condolences, saying, “Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy.”
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on February 10, 2025. The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that there is no active threat to the community at this time.
