Monrovia, Liberia – The World Health Organization (WHO) has delivered a crucial shipment of medicines, medical supplies, and equipment to Liberia’s Ministry of Health. This includes essential items for maternal and newborn care, blood safety, laboratory services, and mental health support.

Dr. Clement Peter, WHO Representative in Liberia, emphasized the organization’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system during the handover ceremony. “We hope these vital supplies and equipment will help improve healthcare quality and positively impact the lives of the people we serve,” he said.

Liberia continues to face significant health challenges, particularly in maternal and newborn care. The country has one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally, with an estimated 742 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Newborn deaths are also concerning, standing at 37 per 1,000 live births. Postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal death, highlights the need for better access to safe blood and blood products. WHO’s donation directly addresses this issue, including equipment for blood storage and transfusion supplies. This will benefit approximately 1.5 million people in three counties: Bong, Margibi, and Nimba. Additionally, the donation supports home-based maternal and newborn care in Rivercess and Sinoe counties, reaching around 300,000 people.

In response to Liberia’s declaration of drug and substance use disorders (SUD) as a public health emergency in August 2024, WHO also provided critical supplies for mental health care. The donation includes medicines for 1,500 at-risk youth and an electroencephalography (EEG) machine, aiding in the accurate diagnosis of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric conditions.

Dr. Catherine Cooper, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, expressed gratitude for WHO’s continued support. “This donation will directly support Liberia’s blood safety program, family health initiatives, and mental health services,” she said, representing the Minister of Health and the people of Liberia.

This timely contribution from WHO is expected to significantly improve access to essential healthcare services across Liberia.
