ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico State Police officer has been named a finalist for a prestigious award after his heroic actions helped save the life of a newborn baby boy in July 2023.
Officer Ismael Perez responded to an emergency call about a mother in distress. Upon arriving at the hospital, he discovered the baby, still attached to the umbilical cord, was unresponsive. Perez immediately began performing life-saving measures, and after a few tense moments, the baby began to cry.
Following the intervention, the hospital informed the mother that her baby boy was healthy.
Perez has been selected as a finalist for the 2025 Axon RISE Award, which honors first responders who demonstrate exceptional dedication and courage in their duties. Voting for the award is open to the public, and those interested can cast their votes through the provided link.
The winner of the 2025 Axon RISE Award will be announced later this month.
