ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico State Police officer has been named a finalist for a prestigious award after his heroic actions helped save the life of a newborn baby boy in July 2023.

Officer Ismael Perez responded to an emergency call about a mother in distress. Upon arriving at the hospital, he discovered the baby, still attached to the umbilical cord, was unresponsive. Perez immediately began performing life-saving measures, and after a few tense moments, the baby began to cry.
