In 2024, the situation of education in Ukraine has become extremely grim. The attacks on education have doubled, which has made some parents too terrified to send their children to school. Meanwhile, it is reported that children in Ukraine have some of the highest levels of lead in their blood, both of which urgently call for more state funding.
Doubled Attacks on Education: A Heavy Blow to Ukrainian Children’s Future
In 2024, educational institutions in Ukraine have suffered a significant increase in attacks. Schools, which should be safe havens for learning, have been frequently targeted. Bombs and gunfire have destroyed school buildings, teaching facilities have been severely damaged, and the normal teaching order has been completely disrupted. Many children have had to leave their schools and classrooms, facing an uncertain future. The psychological trauma caused by these attacks has made it difficult for children to focus on their studies even if they return to school. Moreover, teachers are also facing great pressure and risks, and some have even been forced to leave their posts, resulting in a shortage of educational resources.
High Blood Lead Levels in Children: Another Hidden Danger
In addition to the attacks on education, the problem of high blood lead levels in children in Ukraine is also worrying. High levels of lead in the blood can have a serious impact on children’s physical and mental health, causing damage to the nervous system, affecting intelligence development, and leading to behavioral problems. The main reasons for the high blood lead levels in children are the destruction of the ecological environment and the pollution of water and soil caused by the war. In some areas affected by the war, children are exposed to lead-containing substances in the environment for a long time, and there is a lack of effective prevention and treatment measures.
Urgent Need for State Funding to Save the Situation
Both the attacks on education and the high blood lead levels in children require a large amount of funds to solve. For the education sector, funds are needed to repair damaged school buildings, purchase teaching equipment, and train teachers to restore the normal teaching order as soon as possible. For the problem of high blood lead levels in children, funds are needed to carry out large-scale blood lead testing, provide treatment and rehabilitation services for children with high blood lead levels, and improve the ecological environment to reduce the source of lead pollution.
