(Olympia, WA) Diapers and other essential baby products can be costly, and sales tax adds to the financial burden for many struggling Washington parents. A new bill introduced this week in the state Legislature aims to provide relief.
On average, Washington parents spend about seventy dollars per month on diapers alone, with even higher expenses for items like baby bottles, cribs, car seats, and clothing. Sales tax is added to these costs, making it even more difficult for families.
Representative Michelle Caldier, a Republican from Gig Harbor, has introduced legislation that seeks to remove the sales tax on diapers and other essential baby products.
“Affording diapers and baby products was a challenge for me, and it’s the same for many families. Our state should help families, not add to their struggles,” said Caldier.
House Bill 1307, which is co-sponsored by all 10 Republican women in the House, would eliminate the retail sales tax on diapers and key child care products starting January 1, 2026. Supporters believe the change could save Washington families hundreds of dollars annually.
