Bengaluru: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka following routine surveillance. The cases were detected at Bengaluru Baptist Hospital as part of ICMR’s ongoing monitoring of respiratory illnesses across India.
The first case involves a 3-month-old girl who was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted with bronchopneumonia. She has since been discharged. The second case concerns an 8-month-old boy who tested positive for the virus on January 3, 2025. He also had a history of bronchopneumonia and is now recovering. Neither patient had any recent international travel history.
ICMR, along with the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), noted that HMPV is circulating globally, including in India. However, no unusual increase in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) has been observed.
BBMP Health Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishore explained, “The hospital initially flagged these cases, and tests later confirmed the infection. We will continue to monitor the situation to assess viral load and potential spread.”
The diagnosis was confirmed through Multiplex PCR testing, which detects microbial RNA or DNA at significant concentrations.
A senior official from the Health and Family Welfare Department added, “Investigations are ongoing to assess the impact of the virus. If necessary, additional testing and control measures will be put in place.”
Ongoing Surveillance and Global Monitoring
The Union Health Ministry, in collaboration with ICMR, continues to monitor trends related to HMPV. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also been providing updates on the virus, including an outbreak in China.
Health Advisories Issued
In light of concerns about the HMPV outbreak, various state governments have issued health advisories.
Maharashtra’s Preventive Measures
The Maharashtra health department has recommended residents cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, wash their hands frequently with soap, and avoid public places if they are showing symptoms.
Delhi’s Response to Respiratory Illnesses
In Delhi, health officials have issued guidelines to manage the risks posed by HMPV and other respiratory illnesses. Dr. Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services, consulted with district medical officers and IDSP officers to discuss the city’s preparedness.
Hospitals in Delhi have been instructed to report cases of ILI and SARI through the IHIP portal, isolate suspected cases, and follow standard safety protocols. Additionally, they are required to keep accurate records of SARI and laboratory-confirmed influenza cases for proper tracking.
Stocking Essential Medications
Hospitals have been advised to stock essential medications, such as paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups, and oxygen supplies, to manage mild cases of respiratory illness.
About HMPV
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes upper respiratory tract infections, similar to the common cold. It mainly affects young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. The virus can lead to severe complications in immunocompromised individuals, particularly during the winter months.
