The first babies of 2025 have arrived in the Barrie and Newmarket areas, bringing joy to local families.
Barrie’s first newborn of the year, Scottie Grace Lorraine Steele, was born at 1:17 a.m. on Wednesday at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH). Weighing in at five pounds, Scottie is the first child for Barrie residents Jenelle Lyman and Quinn Steele. The couple was overjoyed with their baby’s safe arrival.
Jenelle had hoped for a New Year’s baby, saying, “I tried really hard. I didn’t want a December 31 baby.”
At RVH, more than 2,000 babies are delivered each year, and the parents expressed their gratitude for the care they received. Jenelle shared, “Honestly, they were the best. They were funny, it was light. Everyone was so helpful. We didn’t have to ask for anything, everything was just done for us.”
However, Scottie wasn’t the first baby born in the region in 2025. That honor went to Jamie-Lynne, born at 12:55 a.m. at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. Weighing seven pounds, seven ounces, Jamie-Lynne is the first baby born in York Region this year. Parents Sarah and Stephen will be taking their newborn home to Georgina.
In total, Southlake welcomed four babies early Wednesday morning.
