THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala — A newborn baby girl was discovered in the early hours of Christmas Day in the Ammathottil, Kerala’s electronic cradle program designed to provide a safe haven for abandoned or relinquished infants. The infant, later named Snigdha, is the 22nd baby received by the Ammathottil in 2024.
The Kerala State Child Welfare Committee, which manages the initiative, operates a state-of-the-art childcare center in Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram, where infants are cared for 24/7 by a dedicated team of two doctors, eight nurses, and 76 caretakers, ensuring the well-being of the children.
In a heartwarming turn of events, the public was invited to suggest a name for the newborn girl, an effort that garnered significant participation from over 2,400 individuals, including media personnel and members of the community. The naming ceremony took place via social media and in-person suggestions, after State Health and Women and Child Development Minister Veena George extended the invitation.
The name selection was made in a unique way: Janu, a two-year-old girl from the Child Welfare Committee, was given the honor of drawing the winning name. She picked the name Snigdha, which was later confirmed as the official name for the newborn. Minister George, who participated in the ceremony online, expressed that all the suggested names were beautiful and meaningful, making the selection process a difficult one. She also mentioned that the other suggested names would be used for future infants under the care of the Committee.
The Ammathottil initiative, launched by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, continues to offer a critical lifeline to babies in need. Through the use of electronic cradles, infants left in the program are given a chance at a better life, with the Kerala government ensuring their safe and compassionate care at the specialized facility.
