Alberta Mother Raises Awareness About Severe Impact Of RSV On Infants

by daisy

As respiratory virus season approaches, an Alberta mother is sharing her harrowing experience with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) after her infant daughter was hospitalized just weeks after birth. Katrina Bellavance’s story highlights the severity of RSV, especially for young children.

A Sudden Onset of Illness

Katrina Bellavance’s daughter, Maxine, was born in December 2022. Just seven weeks into her life, the household was struck by a wave of RSV, first affecting Bellavance’s two older children before Maxine contracted the virus.

“When she did get sick, it came on very quickly,” Bellavance recalled, emphasizing how rapidly the situation escalated.

On a seemingly ordinary night, Maxine went to bed healthy, but around 3 a.m., everything changed. She woke up coughing and struggling to breathe.

“You could see her whole stomach pulling in when she was trying to breathe. And her throat was just struggling,” Bellavance explained, recalling the fear she felt as a mother. “There’s nothing worse than watching your baby struggle to breathe. It’s an awful experience.”

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

Concerned for her daughter’s well-being, Bellavance rushed Maxine to the emergency room. Upon arrival, medical staff quickly placed Maxine on oxygen due to dangerously low oxygen levels.

“She remained in the hospital for several days on oxygen until she was able to breathe on her own,” Bellavance shared. “It was a long few days. It took everything out of her. She was limp and didn’t have energy.”

Even after her discharge, Maxine faced a long recovery. “It took probably at least a week after that before she cleared the runny nose and had a little more energy. She had a cough for a month after that,” Bellavance added, illustrating the lingering effects of the virus.

Understanding RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus is a common respiratory virus that can lead to serious illnesses, particularly in young infants and older adults. For children under two, those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, or individuals with weakened immune systems, RSV can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia.

Dr. Eliana Castillo, a clinical associate professor at the University of Calgary, noted that symptoms of RSV are similar to those of a cold or flu. In infants, symptoms may include difficulty breathing, feeding challenges, and increased irritability.

“If the first time that child gets RSV is in the first few months of life, the consequences can be very serious,” Dr. Castillo warned. “When kids get RSV in the first few months of life, there is a risk that they may need hospitalization, which can be as high as 10 percent.”

The Importance of Prevention

While RSV poses significant risks, there are preventive measures that families can take to reduce the likelihood of infection. Good hand hygiene, wearing masks, and maintaining distance from others who are ill can be effective strategies.

Currently, there is an RSV vaccine available for adults over 60 and pregnant women, although it comes at a cost in Alberta. For infants at high risk of severe RSV-related illness, specific medications are available through Alberta Health Services.

Parents are encouraged to consult their healthcare providers for more information about preventive measures and treatment options.

Community Awareness and Support

Bellavance’s experience serves as a crucial reminder for parents and caregivers about the potential dangers of RSV. Her story is not just a personal account; it aims to raise awareness about a virus that many may not fully understand.

As families prepare for the respiratory virus season, Bellavance urges others to stay vigilant. “It’s essential for parents to recognize the signs of RSV and to seek medical help promptly if they notice any troubling symptoms in their infants,” she advised.

In sharing her family’s ordeal, Bellavance hopes to encourage discussions about RSV and its impact on infants. Her story highlights the need for ongoing education about the virus, especially as it can affect the most vulnerable members of the community.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

As RSV season approaches, the importance of awareness and prevention cannot be overstated. The experiences of families like Bellavance’s underline the urgency of understanding respiratory illnesses and their potential consequences for infants.

Parents should be proactive in seeking information and guidance on RSV and other respiratory viruses, especially as they pertain to young children. By sharing stories and experiences, communities can better prepare themselves to support families facing the challenges of RSV and promote overall health during this critical season.

For more information on RSV and preventive measures, parents and caregivers are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals and utilize resources from health organizations. Together, through education and awareness, we can mitigate the impact of RSV on our youngest and most vulnerablec populations.
