LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — A Lake County family is urgently seeking information after their infant granddaughter, Makenna Rae, suffered severe abuse that has dramatically altered her life. Jennifer Kvoriak, now the full-time caregiver for Makenna, is calling for answers as the investigation into the case unfolds.
A Dramatic Turn of Events
The tragic turn of events began over Memorial Day Weekend. According to Kvoriak’s attorney, Laura DePledge, Makenna, who was just six months old at the time, weighed only 12 pounds. The severity of her condition required her to be intubated for eight days due to head trauma. Kvoriak described a particularly distressing night when Makenna experienced multiple seizures, raising fears about her survival.
“Her organs were severely bruised, with the liver being the most affected,” Kvoriak explained. “Her face was bruised and swollen, although a lot of that has now healed.”
Medical and Emotional Toll
Makenna is now at home with Kvoriak, who has been granted emergency temporary custody while law enforcement investigates the circumstances surrounding the infant’s injuries. The abuse has had a profound impact on Makenna’s health, leaving her in need of extensive medical care. Kvoriak, who has had to resign from her job to manage Makenna’s treatment and numerous doctor’s appointments, described the gravity of the situation.
“She doesn’t eat properly, she is blind due to her head trauma, and she has sustained numerous broken bones,” Kvoriak said. “She was in excruciating pain and suffered immensely. Yet, she remains a miracle and a fighter.”
Investigation and Community Appeal
The case is currently under criminal investigation by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, which is reviewing the evidence provided by the Willowick Police Department. Kvoriak and DePledge, who are working closely on the case, are uncertain about the identity of the perpetrator and are appealing to the public for assistance.
“We believe someone out there knows something that could be crucial to solving this case and bringing justice for Makenna,” DePledge stated. Both Kvoriak and DePledge are urging the community to avoid spreading unverified information on social media and to come forward with any relevant details.
Future Uncertain
Kvoriak remains dedicated to Makenna’s recovery, but the extent of her injuries raises significant concerns about her future. “We don’t know if she will ever be able to sit, stand, walk, or talk. Her injuries are severe, devastating, and could have lifelong implications,” Kvoriak added.
Support for Makenna
In response to the mounting medical expenses, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of Makenna’s treatment, specialty equipment, and medications. The community’s support is crucial as the family navigates this challenging time.
