A 12-month-old baby has undergone major surgery following an attack by an XL bully dog in Lixnaw over the weekend.
The incident occurred at the baby’s family home on Friday night. Emergency services were called, and the child was transported to University Hospital Kerry with severe injuries.
The dog involved in the attack has since been euthanized.
Gardaí in Tralee have reported that this is the second attack by an XL bully dog in Kerry in the past six months.
American XL bully dogs have been linked to several serious incidents in Ireland this year. In June, a similar breed was involved in the death of 23-year-old Nicole Morey in Limerick.
Garda Aidan O’Mahony noted that new legislation will make it significantly more difficult to own an XL bully dog.
