LEXINGTON, MA — Authorities are investigating the death of a baby who was found unresponsive in a car in Lexington, Massachusetts, on Tuesday. The child later passed away.
Lexington Fire Chief Derek Sencabaugh expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “It’s horrible,” he said. “None of us can truly understand or would ever want to feel the pain a family goes through after losing a child. The pain they will experience is unimaginable and will likely last a lifetime.”
The one-year-old boy was discovered not breathing in a car parked on Massachusetts Avenue around 5:30 p.m. His distraught mother was with him at the time. The parking lot is located next to a walking and biking path and is adjacent to a daycare center.
“It’s just so, so sad,” said Jason Fligg, a local resident whose children previously attended the nearby daycare. He visited the daycare on Wednesday to offer support to the owner. “It’s heartbreaking. The owner of the daycare is dedicated to helping kids grow into wonderful people, and this tragedy is just devastating. I can’t even describe the pit in my stomach over this.”
The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death remain unclear. Police have not yet stated whether they suspect foul play or if the child attended the nearby daycare. Fire Chief Sencabaugh confirmed that the family resides in Lexington.
“It’s a tight-knit community,” Sencabaugh noted. “Many people here know each other, so this tragedy will deeply affect the entire community. There will be a lot of pain that follows.”
The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office and local police are continuing their investigation into the incident. The cause of the baby’s death has not yet been determined.
WBZ-TV reached out to the daycare owner for comment, but she declined to speak on the matter.
