JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy is being recognized for helping deliver a baby while on duty.
Sgt. Jeremy Barbin was at a crime scene when a man approached him for help. The man’s girlfriend was in labor at their home.
Sgt. Barbin quickly responded. Upon arriving at the home, he assisted in delivering the baby and then took the infant and mother to the hospital.
“We walked into the home and saw that the woman was already in active labor,” Sgt. Barbin said. “We took immediate action to help with the delivery and to safely remove the umbilical cord from around the baby’s neck.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) notes that deputies usually do not receive specific training for childbirth. However, they are prepared to handle various emergencies.
Sgt. Barbin expressed his appreciation for being able to assist. “Every day is different in our unit, and you never know what you might face,” he said. “I’m grateful we were in the right place at the right time to help deliver this baby and provide relief to the family.”
Sheriff Mark Pettway praised Sgt. Barbin’s actions. “Sgt. Barbin went above and beyond the call of duty. He took charge of a critical situation when he could have waited for others,” Sheriff Pettway said. “He demonstrated his strong commitment to saving lives.”
Sgt. Barbin will receive the “Lifesaving Medal” on Friday, Aug. 16, at the JCSO Academy graduation.
