The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is increasingly recognized for its commitment to education as a cornerstone for sustainable development in the Niger Delta region. Recently, the Commission’s efforts have focused significantly on promoting learning among youths, particularly the girl child.
Earlier this year, the NDDC awarded scholarships to 200 deserving candidates from the region to pursue Master’s Degrees abroad. This initiative forms a crucial part of the agency’s human capital development strategy aimed at transforming the fortunes of the region through education. Most recently, Chairman Chiedu Ebie emphasized the importance of prioritizing girl-child education, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering sustainable development across the country.
During a ceremony marking International Women’s Day in Agbor, Delta State, the Commission urged governments at all levels to implement measures ensuring girls have access to quality education. Represented by Hon. John C. Aleh, Ebie stressed that educating girls empowers them to excel in all aspects of life, underscoring their critical role in national progress.
Guest speaker Mrs. Ben Utalor Goziem emphasized the necessity of educating girls, stating that educated women are crucial to national prosperity and resilience in the face of future challenges. She asserted that investing in girls’ education is vital for nation-building and securing a prosperous future.
The call by Ebie and the NDDC to prioritize girl-child education has garnered praise for its relevance and commendable initiative. It aligns with global recognition that empowering girls not only enhances their ability to make informed decisions but also contributes significantly to economic and social advancement.
In the words of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, “There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.” Analysts agree that educating girls in Nigeria equips them with the skills and knowledge needed to shape their futures from basic education through to higher education.
The NDDC’s proactive stance on girl-child education sets a commendable example, one that other governmental and non-governmental bodies, as well as philanthropic individuals, should emulate.
