The Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Minister Rachel Taylor, is enhancing early childhood education in Turks and Caicos by offering a substantial 75% discount on daycare services exclusively for locals.
Minister Taylor explained in an interview with The SUN that this initiative is made possible through collaborations with private schools and daycare centers, underscoring the government’s commitment to the youngest members of the community. She emphasized the crucial role of early childhood education as the foundation for lifelong learning and stressed that ensuring access to quality early education is a priority for the government.
The initiative involves partnering with private sector entities rather than establishing government-run daycare centers. Minister Taylor clarified that parents can select from a list of approved centers, offering flexibility and choice in daycare options.
Only Turks and Caicos Islanders are eligible for this discounted program, which aims to improve literacy and numeracy skills among children entering kindergarten. Minister Taylor highlighted the positive impact of early daycare access on children’s educational development.
To maintain high standards, almost all participating daycare centers are registered with the Department of Education. The government is also focused on enhancing the skills of daycare providers through training programs offered in collaboration with institutions like the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College.
Furthermore, the Ministry, in partnership with UNICEF, has introduced early screening programs to identify and address learning gaps among kindergarten students early on. This proactive measure ensures that every child receives adequate support from the start of their educational journey.
Minister Taylor emphasized the importance of continuous professional development for teachers across the islands to uphold educational standards effectively.
The government’s efforts underscore its dedication to advancing early childhood education and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all Turks and Caicos Islanders.
