MANILA – The National Bureau of Investigation-Human Trafficking Division (NBI-HTRAD) apprehended a woman in Muntinlupa City for allegedly selling a newborn online for P25,000.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago reported Thursday that the arrest stemmed from information provided by the Department of Justice – Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking – NBI CyberTip Center (DOJ-IACAT-NBI Cybertip). They identified Christina Paule as the suspect engaged in the illegal sale of babies via Facebook.
Paule, a 51-year-old midwife, purportedly attempted to sell the infant, just days old, using the social media platform.
Following a coordinated operation involving government agents and support from Exodus Road Philippines, Paule was apprehended. She faces charges under Republic Act 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act), as amended, in relation to RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), and RA 9208 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 1998).
The rescued baby was entrusted to the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-National Capital Region.
Undersecretary Janella Ejercito Estrada of the National Authority for Child Care (NACC) praised the swift action, calling it a crucial step in combating child trafficking and illegal adoption. She emphasized the importance of public vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities.
Estrada reaffirmed the commitment of DSWD, NACC, DOJ, NBI, and allied agencies to safeguard children from exploitation and prosecute those responsible. The NACC also confirmed that the suspect did not undergo legal adoption procedures with their agency.
