Rotary District 9127 has committed to prioritizing girl-child education in the country.
The newly established district also aims to focus on youth empowerment, healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. Mike Nwanoshiri, the district’s pioneer governor, made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
“We are going to introduce girl-child education. It’s a decision. If we don’t do it as their parents, they will not grow well,” Nwanoshiri said. “We talk about mental health. What is the cause of mental health? It stems from our parents. What kind of training did you give your young girl when she was young? How did you bring her up? We must not let them be lost. If we don’t start now to address this issue, we will have problems.”
Nwanoshiri expressed his excitement at being appointed district governor and emphasized his goal of growing membership. He announced that the club would provide reusable sanitary pads for girls across the district.
He also urged youths to avoid societal vices and to work hard. “I am excited to lead this vibrant and dedicated community of Rotarians, and I am committed to building on the excellent work of our past governors,” he said.
“We will start with the project I have a matching grant for, which is the provision of reusable sanitary pads for girls. We will take it up as a serious project this Rotary year.
“We have been talking about youth empowerment, but this time, I want to change the scenario. Now it will be about youth impact. As an organization, we will create opportunities so that by the time they finish school, they will have something to do and become self-reliant.
“Then we can ask them to join the organization that helped them achieve this. That is what I mean by impact. It does not mean just giving money to spend. We aim to empower them to stand on their own.”
