Nancy Sagwete, a mental health nurse from Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, was recently recognized for her heroic actions in saving a six-week-old baby’s life while off duty.
Ms. Sagwete, who resides in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, used her life support training to revive her neighbor’s baby, Lily, who had stopped breathing. When her neighbor urgently handed Lily to her, Ms. Sagwete immediately applied her training, administering rescue breaths that successfully revived the baby.
Lily, who had been born prematurely and was suffering from a chest infection, was rushed to the hospital and spent several weeks there before making a full recovery.
Ms. Sagwete received a bravery award from Hertfordshire Constabulary Chief Constable Charlie Hall for her quick thinking and life-saving efforts. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of nurses being prepared to use their life-saving skills when needed.
Reflecting on the incident, Ms. Sagwete shared, “Every time I see baby Lily now, I feel proud that I was able to make a difference.” Her team leader, Barabara Wireko, praised her dedication and described her as an inspiration to colleagues and patients alike.
