Selecting a baby name can be an exciting yet stressful task for expecting parents. For Ita* and Paul*, this process has become contentious due to Paul’s insistence on a particular name.
Paul is strongly advocating for a name that Ita vehemently opposes, revealing their disagreement on Reddit.
“He thinks it’s a cute name and will start a naming trend,” Ita explained. Paul has been fixated on this name long before they began having children. Despite Ita’s objections, Paul remains unwavering.
“My husband thinks it’s a cute name and will start a naming trend,” she reiterated. “I think the name is basically painting a target on a kid’s back and no one will take them seriously.”
Paul, an avid gamer, prefers names that reference his favorite characters or inside jokes understood only by fellow gamers. The name he is set on is Mips, with Mipsie as an alternative.
“He’s serious about it,” Ita said. “No matter what I say, I cannot convince him otherwise.”
While Ita loves her husband, she despises the name choice, believing it to be “terrible.” She feels compelled to show him how bad it really is.
“It’s the only name I’ve had to firmly reject,” she said, but Paul “insists it’d be a good name for a kid.”
The Reddit community quickly rallied behind Ita, advising her to stand her ground. Some compared the name to “an eradicated childhood illness from the 1920s.”
“‘Why does she walk like that?’ – ‘Oh, she had the Mips as a child,’” one user joked.
“You have to do whatever you can to save your baby,” another commenter urged. “I first read it as ‘Nips.’”
“Not trying to be mean, but that must be one of the worst names I’ve seen,” another wrote.
Several users suggested an alternative for Paul. “If he wants to name something Mipsie, get a cat,” one recommended. “Mips seems like such a cute animal name!”
Following a flood of comments criticizing the name, Paul responded.
“OK, I get it; Mips/Mipsie is bad,” he admitted. “I thought it sounded cute for a girl, but I got the message. For those curious, it was a Super Mario 64 reference. It became a bit of a fake ‘argument’ around the house. It was all in good fun. At the end of the day, we were always going to name our kid something normal.”
