A woman in Louisville has overcome addiction after experiencing a drug overdose in front of her newborn daughter. Mercury Cougler, who struggled with substance abuse for many years, shared her journey of addiction, influenced by her parents‘ own battles with drugs.
“For me, it’s been a daily struggle,” Cougler admitted, reflecting on her past addiction. Drugs had consumed her life before the birth of her daughter, leading her into using hard substances like heroin and methamphetamine.
Cougler even found herself using drugs alongside her mother during her twenties. “My mom became more of a drug companion,” she recalled.
At her lowest points, Cougler sold drugs and lived on the streets, indifferent to the harm she caused others as long as she could chase her next high.
Everything changed about a decade ago when she met Arthur, her partner. “He played a crucial role in turning my life around,” Cougler acknowledged.
Today, Cougler is celebrating her journey to recovery, recognizing that the harrowing experience of overdosing in front of her newborn daughter was a turning point that saved both their lives.
