Texas officials are investigating after a premature baby girl was found abandoned near a bayou in Katy. The baby, still with the umbilical cord attached, was discovered wrapped in a towel, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez in a Facebook post on June 15.
Daniela Fedele, who was walking with her family, found the baby. “I saw two little feet moving and called out to my husband, ‘Oh my God, a baby, a baby,'” she told KHOU.
The baby was taken to a hospital and is in fair condition, Sheriff Gonzalez reported. Authorities are searching for a man seen holding the baby. Surveillance footage from KRIV shows the man leaving the baby on a small bridge and then running away.
Juan Garcia from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Child Abuse Unit said, “The baby was a newborn, with a fresh placenta, so it was just born this morning.”
Authorities urge anyone with information to call 713-830-3250 or Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477). Katy is located about 30 miles west of Houston.
