Flint, MI – On Tuesday, June 11, the Flint Cultural Center buzzed with excitement as Rx Kids organized its first-ever baby parade. The event aimed to spotlight a unique cash prescription initiative for Flint mothers.
Inspired by a century-old tradition from “Children’s Year” in 1918, the parade celebrated Flint’s youngest residents and their families. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, director of Flint Rx Kids, expressed enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the importance of child health in community well-being.
The festivities kicked off with music and speakers, followed by families parading through a nearby parking lot at the Cultural Center. Leading the procession was Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, accompanied by the Westwood Heights Hamady High School marching band.
Reflecting on the initiative, Mayor Neeley highlighted Rx Kids’ commitment to supporting vulnerable families in Flint. He underscored the program’s role in aiding infants and mothers facing economic challenges.
Children enjoyed various free activities, including oversized checkers and horseback riding, along with scoops of Rx Kids-branded Strawberry Sweetheart ice cream from the MSU Dairy Store. Additionally, attendees got a sneak peek at the planned Rx Kids mural by artist Johnny Fletcher, set to adorn the Buick Gallery wall this spring.
This event marks the second initiative by Rx Kids to raise awareness and support for the cash prescription program, following a successful Valentine’s Day community launch. To date, the program has disbursed over $1.6 million to more than 750 Flint mothers.
Rx Kids continues to strive towards improving infant health and supporting families in the Flint community.
