PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. (June 4, 2024) — The Presidio of Monterey’s New Parent Support Program (NPSP) held a baby shower for new and expecting parents on May 24 at the General Stilwell Community Center. Nearly 40 families joined in several rounds of baby bingo and a raffle, and learned about community resources.
The event featured balloons, decorative tables, gift baskets, and a food buffet, creating a festive atmosphere. Each family received a diaper bag filled with newborn supplies and a basket of bathing items.
“Events like this benefit many families. It’s not just about the gifts, but also about building community,” said Staff Sgt. Oliveros of the 517th Training Group.
Since 2020, Oliveros and his wife, Aleah Mohamed, have coordinated similar events to help military families connect with each other and available resources. Mohamed welcomed guests and facilitated games at this year’s event, while Oliveros assisted with organization and set-up.
“This baby shower tradition is special. Many of us are far from our families and seek opportunities to connect,” said Gökçe Garip, a military spouse expecting twin girls. “Knowing we share similar experiences in starting families is reassuring, especially for first-time parents.”
Representatives from the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Family Birth Center provided information and answered questions about local birthing resources.
Sponsored by the USO and organized by NPSP Nurse Grace Maravilla, the event offered a touch of home for families. New and expecting parents introduced themselves and forged new connections.
“This is my first time partnering with the USO,” said Maravilla, who manages the NPSP. “It’s a great way to unite the community and inform new parents about available support and resources.”
The NPSP assists soldiers and family members expecting a child or with children up to three years old in building a support system within the local community.
“We encourage people to join our weekly playgroups,” said Maravilla. “We focus on building community, especially for new parents. Support is crucial.”
As a 19-year military spouse, Maravilla understands the challenges of moving with the Army. “For many, this is their first duty station. Everything is new. I always advise service members and families to engage with us early. Our services are free. Gather as much information as you can to be the best parents possible.”
The NPSP offers various services, including home visits, support groups, and parenting classes. It also provides strategies for coping with stress, isolation, military transitions like deployments and post-deployment reunions, and the everyday demands of parenthood.
NPSP playgroups are held every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the ACS General Stilwell Community Center Gold Room, 4260 Gigling Rd.
