Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections even if the food does not look or smell spoiled. Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and developed symptoms should seek medical help and inform their doctors about the potential Listeria exposure.

People who have eaten the recalled food should watch for symptoms over the next several weeks, as listeriosis can take up to 70 days to develop. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Diagnosing Listeria requires specific lab tests as it can mimic other illnesses.

Those most at risk include pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients. For pregnant women, Listeria infection can result in mild, flu-like symptoms but may lead to severe outcomes like premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth.
