The National Identity Mark for private schools in Abu Dhabi helps parents choose schools that excel academically and foster a connection to Emirati culture, according to a senior official.
In an interview with Gulf News, Dr. Sarah Al Suwaidi, director of the Education Quality Assurance and Monitoring Office at the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), explained: “The National Identity Mark provides parents with a comprehensive view of how well schools promote national identity. It helps parents select schools that not only perform academically but also enrich their children’s understanding of Emirati culture and values.”
School Performance
Launched in 2022, the National Identity Mark aims to increase students’ knowledge of UAE traditions, customs, and values. So far, 153 schools have been evaluated: eight were rated ‘Outstanding,’ 33 ‘Good,’ 79 ‘Acceptable,’ and 33 ‘Weak.’
Six schools requested re-evaluations after the initial inspections. By the end of the academic year, an additional 60 private schools will be inspected.
Incentive for Schools
Dr. Al Suwaidi noted that the mark incentivizes schools to integrate national identity into their curricula, benefiting all students. “This aligns with the UAE leadership’s priorities, ensuring that fostering a strong national identity is central to education,” she said.
The National Identity Mark focuses on three domains: ‘Culture,’ including history, heritage, and Arabic language; ‘Values,’ such as respect, compassion, and global understanding; and ‘Citizenship,’ including belonging, volunteering, and conservation.
This first-of-its-kind initiative aims to build a cohesive society that values both national culture and academic achievement.
NIM vs. Irtiqaa
Dr. Al Suwaidi explained the difference between the National Identity Mark (NIM) and Irtiqaa, the main school inspection framework. NIM focuses specifically on national identity, while Irtiqaa evaluates overall school performance based on six core standards, including student achievement and leadership.
“While the National Identity Mark is independently evaluated and focuses on culture and identity, it is one of many factors in Irtiqaa inspections,” she said. “Both systems provide detailed reports that help schools improve academically and culturally.”
Importance for Parents and Students
Dr. Al Suwaidi emphasized the relevance of the National Identity Mark in Abu Dhabi’s multicultural environment. “For Emirati students, this mark connects them to the UAE’s rich heritage. For expatriate students, it offers a vital exchange of cultural knowledge, fostering mutual respect and social harmony,” she said.
She advised students to value the NIM for their overall development. “National identity links personal growth with cultural and ethical values. Integrating these values into education helps students develop a well-rounded perspective and become global citizens,” she added.
Improving Ratings
To improve their ratings, schools should ensure students understand the purpose of activities promoting UAE’s national identity. “Schools need to thoroughly understand the criteria of the National Identity Mark and align their strategies effectively,” Dr. Al Suwaidi said.
Community Involvement
Engagement with the entire school community, including parents, is crucial. Dr. Al Suwaidi cited Al Yasmina School as an example. The school improved its rating significantly by involving parents and aligning with the National Identity Mark framework. This collective effort enhanced cultural pride and belonging among students.
Wider Societal Goals
Dr. Al Suwaidi warned that neglecting the National Identity Mark could impact students’ social outcomes. “Schools that bypass this focus may hinder students’ holistic development and their ability to become well-rounded members of society,” she said. The mark’s emphasis on values like respect and tolerance creates a harmonious educational setting. Without it, students might lack critical social skills essential for their future roles as responsible citizens.
