MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee couple has finally brought their baby boy home after a challenging start to parenthood.
Jorge Joachin and Vatsanah Vongpanya became first-time parents when their son was born at just 22 weeks. Despite the anxiety and difficulties, they now feel there’s no place like home.
“It’s been a rollercoaster,” said Joachin.
“I never thought I would be here, able to hold him and bring him home,” Vongpanya added. “It was a different experience than I expected.”
Their son was born on January 3, weighing less than a pound. Instead of going home, he was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Ascension Columbia Saint Mary’s Hospital, where doctors and nurses provided exceptional care.
“They’re like superheroes,” Joachin said.
After 144 days in the NICU, Joachin and Vongpanya were able to take their baby boy, Malakai, home.
