A Calgary daycare worker admitted guilt to assault charges after abusing a 13-month-old baby over three days. Rita Niure, 30, employed at Kidzee Early Learning and Daycare in December 2022, acknowledged the offenses.
The baby, referred to as RD to protect identity, suffered mistreatment according to a statement of facts presented by Prosecutor Rebecca Ross. Defence lawyer Ronverg Mendoza proposed a conditional sentence order, contrasting Ross’s jail sentence suggestion. Justice Paul Mason will announce the decision next month.
Incidents of abuse were captured on CCTV footage. RD exhibited unusual fearfulness, noted by parents after daycare drop-offs. Bruises prompted a hospital visit, leading to police involvement and subsequent investigation.
Video evidence displayed Niure slapping, dragging, and throwing RD during nap times. RD’s mother expressed trauma and guilt in a victim impact statement.
Justice Mason viewed the video and will decide the sentence in the upcoming month.
