This June, the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is championing the “First 2,000 Days of Life” at various events across the region.

Keryl de Haan, MLHD’s Perinatal Infant Mental Health Clinical Lead, emphasizes the importance of these events. They aim to assist new parents in connecting with their babies and dispelling misconceptions about infant mental health among health professionals.

“We want parents and carers to understand the significance of simple acts like smiling, playing, and talking for their baby’s development. Our goal is for every child to thrive by age five,” said Keryl.

She references a TED talk featuring 7-year-old Molly Wright, underscoring the impact of interactions during the first 2,000 days of life on child development.

Creating a supportive community is paramount. Parents and carers need support during pregnancy and after childbirth, as their well-being influences their interactions with their babies.

These events will also raise awareness about how parental well-being affects infant care. Attendees will receive resources to recognize when they might need help and where to find it.

“If you ever feel overwhelmed, reaching out to your GP, maternity or local hospital, child and family health nurse, or other health professional can guide you to the support you need,” advises Keryl.
