This tragic event follows another deadly fire at an amusement park in Gujarat, where 27 people, including four children, lost their lives. The severity of the injuries in that incident made identification difficult, highlighting the dangers posed by such disasters.
Fires are not uncommon in India, often attributed to substandard construction practices, overcrowding, and a lack of safety measures. Legal action is being pursued against the hospital owner, although details regarding the cause of the infants’ deaths remain undisclosed.
The fire erupted at the New Born Baby Care hospital in Vivek Vihar, triggering a rapid response from the fire department. Atul Garg, the director of Delhi’s fire department, explained that the fire spread quickly due to an explosion in an oxygen cylinder.
Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, described the situation as heartbreaking and pledged to hold those responsible for the negligence accountable. Prime Minister Modi offered condolences to the grieving families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
These tragic incidents occurred amidst a severe heatwave in northern India, with temperatures soaring to 46.8 degrees Celsius in Delhi, as reported by the India Meteorological Department.
