Addressing the concerning trend, Dr. Agboola stated, “We have been actively engaged in health protection efforts in recent weeks. Unfortunately, the public discourse surrounding pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, and the surge in cases has deeply impacted our community.”

She continued, “We mourn the loss of a five-week-old baby to pertussis a few weeks ago in Rugby. Collaborating closely with the UK Health Security Agency, we are devising a range of interventions to support the affected community.”

Recent data shared by UKHSA’s interactive map revealed three new cases in Rugby in the past week, with a total of seven in the preceding fortnight and 35 cases reported in the year up to May 4.

Furthermore, Warwick recorded 31 cases, Stratford-on-Avon reported 24 cases, Nuneaton & Bedworth documented six cases, and North Warwickshire registered three cases during the same period in 2024.

Understanding Whooping Cough:

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs, initially manifesting symptoms akin to a common cold.

After approximately a week, the infection progresses to prolonged bouts of coughing, often worsening during nighttime.

In infants, breathing difficulties may ensue after coughing spells, which might not always include the characteristic whooping sound, posing challenges in diagnosis.

Advice on Whooping Cough:

Government guidance emphasizes the importance of isolation and treatment for those diagnosed with whooping cough. Staying home for 48 hours after commencing antibiotics or three weeks after symptom onset, if antibiotics are not administered, is crucial to prevent further spread, especially among vulnerable groups like infants.

Vaccination remains the most effective safeguard for infants and children against whooping cough.

Seeking Assistance:

Prompt medical attention is essential if:

  • A baby under six months old displays symptoms.
  • A severe cough persists or worsens.
  • Contact with a person diagnosed with whooping cough occurs during pregnancy.
  • Contact with a person diagnosed with whooping cough is made, and there’s a compromised immune system.

In severe cases, characterized by bluish or grayish skin discoloration, breathing difficulties, seizures, or chest pain, immediate medical attention, either through 999 or A&E, is imperative.
