Liam and Olivia remain the most popular names for newborn boys and girls in the United States, maintaining their dominance for the fifth consecutive year in 2023. Additionally, Mateo makes its debut in the top 10 list of baby names.
The Social Security Administration annually monitors the names given to newborns in each state, compiling data dating back to 1880 from applications for Social Security cards. This information reflects evolving cultural and demographic trends. The latest findings were disclosed on Friday.
Liam has maintained its position as the top choice for boys for seven consecutive years, while Olivia has led the girls’ list for five years, displacing Emma, who previously held the top spot for five years.
Following Liam, the most popular names for boys, in descending order, are Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, Mateo, Theodore, Henry, Lucas, and William. For girls, following Olivia, the most common names are Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Ava, Evelyn, and Luna.
According to the most recent data from the Social Security Administration, there were 3.58 million births in the United States in 2023, slightly lower than the previous year’s 3.66 million, reflecting an overall decline in the nation’s birthrate.
The Social Security Administration notes that the influence of social media personalities and popular television programs contributes to the increasing popularity of certain names. The fastest rising name for boys is Izael, while the second fastest rising, Chozen, surged to the 813th position in 2023. Chozen was a central character in the last season of the Netflix series Cobra Kai.
Among girls, one of the rapidly rising baby names is Kaeli, which climbed 1,692 spots. The Social Security Administration remarked in a news release, “Parents evidently resonated with the YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen, also known as Kaeli Mae, who consistently promotes a clean, organized, and aesthetically pleasing lifestyle.”
