New Delhi – Dr. Savita Datt, a retired political scientist and former Research Officer at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis, has dedicated her life to reshaping the destinies of underprivileged children, marking a profound impact on countless lives and fostering a ripple effect of positive change.
In 2019, Dr. Datt embarked on her journey under a tree in a Faridabad park, where seven children became the catalysts for change. With time, their numbers burgeoned to over 700. Driven by her passion, Dr. Datt founded the Prakash Deep Trust, which established a “Centre for Learning and Library,” offering classes from 6th to 12th grades. This modest beginning burgeoned into a beacon of hope for the marginalized sections of society.
Dr. Datt firmly advocates that quality education serves as the cornerstone for uplifting the impoverished and eradicating the scourge of poverty. Her conviction stems from the firm foundation of basic education provided by her father, a government servant, to her and her siblings.
In an exclusive conversation with The New Indian, Dr. Datt articulated, “A Drop of Light illuminates that it’s easier than we think to make a difference–to mobilize our communities to level the playing field between the haves and the have-nots–with just the initial investment of a bit of time and love.”
Armed with a degree in political science from Delhi University, followed by a PhD, Dr. Datt’s marital alliance with an active-duty army officer led her to traverse diverse regions of India, enabling her to grasp the nuances of varied cultures and traditions.
Dr. Datt’s fervor for education was ignited by an incident involving the children of her house assistant. She commenced teaching these children beneath a tree, which eventually culminated in the establishment of multiple schools. Presently, the network has expanded to encompass six schools, with an additional school housed within a dedicated structure. Approximately 650 children now receive quality education, complemented by soft skills training.
The fruits of Dr. Datt’s labor are evident in the accomplishments of the students: 95 individuals have completed their secondary education, securing their Class 10 certificates. Among them, 51 have transitioned into gainful employment, breaking the shackles of poverty and contributing meaningfully to their families and communities. Furthermore, 44 students have successfully concluded their higher secondary education, equipping themselves with vital knowledge and skills. An inspiring cohort of 25 students have ventured into higher studies, pursuing disciplines such as MBA, BCA, journalism, and beyond.
Prakash Deep Trust goes beyond the realm of education by ensuring that children can attend school alongside their younger siblings, offering meals, clean water, and learning centers in close proximity to slum areas. This holistic approach serves as a bulwark against child labor and empowers the forthcoming generation. Leveraging technology, including computers and vocational training, the trust endeavors to bridge existing disparities and prepare students for the exigencies of a rapidly evolving world.
Despite crossing the threshold of 80 years and confronting the daunting challenge of cancer, Dr. Datt remains resolute in her mission. The radiance on the faces of the children she educates serves as a wellspring of boundless energy. Her memoir, titled “A Drop of Life,” chronicles her life’s odyssey, encapsulating the myriad trials and triumphs she encountered.
As of February 2024, Prakash Deep boasts an enrollment of 640 children, emblematic of Dr. Savita Datt’s unwavering vision, which continues to illuminate the path toward a more equitable and promising future.
