The campaign offers accessible guidance via the Start for Life website, aiming to empower parents in deciphering their babies’ expressions, reactions, noises, and cries – vital means through which infants communicate their needs and emotions.
Recognizing the significance of the first two years of a child’s life, during which their brain forms a staggering one million neural connections per second, the campaign underscores the pivotal role of parent-child interaction in laying the groundwork for physical and emotional health. Secure relationships established during this period not only influence immediate outcomes but also mitigate the risk of mental health challenges in the future.
Dame Andrea Leadsom, Minister for Public Health, Start for Life, and Primary Care, emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring every infant receives an optimal start in life. She stressed the importance of promoting secure attachment between babies and their caregivers during the critical period from pregnancy to two years old, citing firsthand feedback from parents nationwide who expressed a need for additional support in cultivating these connections.
In response to this demand, parents are provided with a spectrum of resources and advice, accessible through family hubs and the Start for Life website. Furthermore, frontline practitioners will receive new guidance aimed at facilitating conversations with parents on nurturing their relationship with their baby.
