Engineers recently undertook a comprehensive examination of the grounds at the former Seán Ross Abbey, a mother and baby home, with the aim of locating hundreds of children’s graves. The examination, which took place on Monday, comes after extensive advocacy efforts by the ‘We Are Still Here’ group.
The Irish Examiner reports that between the years 1931 and 1969, a staggering 1,091 children lost their lives while residing at the Seán Ross Abbey. However, the previous ground examination in 2019 yielded the discovery of only 42 graves, leaving numerous questions unanswered.
“We Are Still Here,” a group committed to seeking justice and answers, holds onto the hope that the truth will be unveiled. Member Teresa Collins, who herself was born at the Abbey, emphasized their primary desire for the unvarnished truth.
This recent examination reflects a significant step in the ongoing quest for transparency and accountability regarding the history of Seán Ross Abbey and the children who once resided there. The results of this latest endeavor will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipated by those who have long sought answers and acknowledgment.
