Jaycina Almond, a model, writer, and single mom, founded The Tender Foundation to support single mothers in the Atlanta area. After becoming a single mom at 20, Almond noticed the lack of resources for women in her situation, inspiring her to create a nonprofit offering essential services.
The foundation provides emergency assistance for bills, rent, utilities, and childcare. It also runs a Diaper Bank, delivering diapers, wipes, and formula, and offers a $500 monthly stipend to 25 single Black mothers in the metro area through its guaranteed income program, The Bridge.
While some programs have eligibility requirements, many are open to all mothers in need. Almond focuses on supporting Black single mothers, as statistics show they face higher rates of poverty. She hopes her work challenges stereotypes about single Black mothers.
Almond’s dedication earned her recognition as an Adidas Honoring Black Excellence (HBE) Honoree. “I’m a Black girl from Kentucky who got pregnant at 20,” Almond said. “I’m not supposed to be sitting here having this conversation.”
As part of the honor, Almond filmed a short video about her work with The Tender Foundation. She hopes the film inspires others to engage in community care. “I hope even one person is inspired to care for those around them,” she said.
Almond’s journey reflects her commitment to building a better future for her daughter and the mothers she helps. Her advice to other single moms is simple: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
