MILFORD, MASS. (WHDH) – A Milford EMT recently helped deliver a baby who arrived earlier than expected, just as a local couple was preparing for a trip to the hospital.
In January, Kayla Alvarez, 38 weeks pregnant, went into labor at home. Realizing the baby was coming too soon, she told her husband, Prescott Caisey, “I think you might need to call 911. I think I’m going to have this baby either here or on the way to the hospital.”
At the time, Caisey, a firefighter trainee in Worcester, dialed 911 for help.
Ruben Tores, a full-time firefighter and part-time EMT, along with his partner Kevin Carlucci, arrived to transport the couple to the hospital. When Caisey asked which hospital they were heading to, Tores responded, “Memorial.” The two then shared a brief moment of recognition.
It turned out that Tores had trained Caisey at the fire academy. “It was one of those perfect moments,” Tores said, reflecting on helping the spouse of someone he knew.
Just minutes into the ride, Alvarez gave birth to Mariah, a 6-pound, 11-ounce baby girl. Both Alvarez and Caisey felt reassured by Tores’ professionalism and the connection between him and Caisey.
“She told me afterwards, ‘Ruben was a rock star, he knew what he was doing, and it made me feel more comfortable knowing that you guys knew each other,’” Caisey said.
Now, Caisey is a father of two and a certified firefighter. Tores, who has delivered many babies in his 21 years as an EMT, said Mariah was his first girl.
As Tores put it, “He’s got experience being a dad already, so it’s nothing to it, as far as being on the job. Always be safe, always come home.”
