In a tragic incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, a 20-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly killed his mother and critically injured his father after they scolded him for excessive mobile phone use.
The attack occurred around 11 p.m. on March 3, when the man struck his parents on the head multiple times with an iron rod, leaving them unconscious and bleeding. His mother succumbed to her injuries, while his father was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
“We received information about the incident at 11:15 p.m., and a first response vehicle was sent to the location,” said Waraseoni Sub-Divisional Officer Abhishek Choudhary. The couple was initially taken to a nearby Civil Hospital but was later referred to a hospital in Gondia, Maharashtra, for life-saving treatment.
Initially charged with attempted murder, the accused now faces a murder charge following his mother’s death.
The man admitted to spending 5-6 hours a day on his mobile phone and isolating himself in his room. Despite his parents’ frequent warnings to focus on his studies, he had few friends due to his addiction. His parents had enrolled him in a private coaching center in Kota in May 2024, but he left after a few months.
The case highlights the severe consequences of phone addiction and the escalating tensions it can create within families.
