GREENPORT, NY — A heroic rescue team saved the life of a one-year-old baby during a recent snowstorm, according to officials.
On Saturday, February 8, at 10:38 p.m., the Greenport Fire Department’s rescue squad received an emergency call about a baby boy who was not breathing. CPR was already in progress when the call came in.
Sam Strickland, Jr., a member of the rescue squad, reported that about a dozen squad members and Southold Town Police Officer Patrick Anderson arrived at the family’s home within minutes.
Upon arrival, they found the baby’s father performing CPR on his son. Officer Anderson set up an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) while the father handed the baby to Strickland. After checking for a pulse and finding none, Strickland began chest compressions. He soon heard faint breathing from the baby.
Strickland then flipped the baby onto his stomach and gave two back slaps. “To my relief, the baby began breathing on his own, every breath getting stronger and stronger,” Strickland said.
Medics from Stony Brook University Hospital arrived shortly after and transported the baby to Eastern Long Island Hospital.
Strickland expressed gratitude for the teamwork displayed during this life-saving effort. “I am proud of our quick response, which contributed to the positive outcome for the child,” he stated.
