Alabama Mother Charged After Newborn Dies, Admits Fentanyl Use

ANNISTON, Ala. (WBRC) — A Calhoun County mother faces charges after her newborn baby died shortly after birth. Whitney Nicole Greene admitted to using fentanyl before her scheduled induction, according to court records.

Anniston Police Chief Nick Bowles told WBRC 6 News that Greene informed medical staff at Regional Medical Center (RMC) during her admission for a scheduled induction that she had recently taken fentanyl.

Doctors attempted to save the baby after an emergency C-section, but the infant did not survive, Bowles said.

According to court records, the alleged drug use occurred on February , and the baby was born on February .

The Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office has requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Greene could face additional charges based on the autopsy results, according to Bowles.

Greene remains hospitalized but will be booked into the Calhoun County Jail upon her release by medical staff, Bowles said.
