Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s Maternity Care Rated “Inadequate” by CQC

A recent report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated the maternity services at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as “inadequate.”

The rating follows an unannounced inspection conducted in March 2024. Since then, the hospital has been working closely with the CQC, the independent regulator for health and social care in England, to address the concerns raised during the inspection.

Kevin McNamara, Chief Executive of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, acknowledged that there is still work to be done but emphasized the improvements made since the inspection. He stated, “We acted immediately following the feedback from inspectors. The CQC has been closely involved in supporting our efforts, and they have acknowledged the progress we’ve made. I want to reassure families that we remain committed to providing safe, high-quality maternity care.”

NHS Gloucestershire highlighted improvements in key areas, including shorter waiting times for fetal scans, enhanced staff training, increased recruitment, and a reduction in cases of postpartum hemorrhage.

Matt Holdaway, Chief Nurse, added, “It’s important for expectant parents and families to know that we continue to deliver good care. We are heavily investing in our services and working closely with regulators to ensure ongoing improvements. The areas identified by the CQC mainly concern training and processes, and we are fully committed to making the necessary changes.”

The full CQC report is available online. For further updates, NHS Gloucestershire can be followed on its website and social media channels.
